FERN RIDGE BEEF PIT BBQ HISTORY
In 1954, a small group of Catholic families in the West Lane area decided to build a church. They had first been celebrating Mass in local homes and later in a Quonset hut by the Veneta Elementary School. They received an $8,500 grant from the Catholic Extension Society and anxiously awaited the arrival of the prefabricated church from Portland. It arrived in packages an through the grace of God, the church was built.
The next task was to furnish the new church with pews and other accessories. How to pay for it? Let’s have a picnic fund raiser !!!!!
60 years later (in 2015), the parish still has a BBQ every year on the last Sunday of July. This event is proudly recognized as the longest running annual picnic fund raiser in all of Lane County. 60 years later it still is – FUN, TRADITION and FUND RAISER.
Beginning as a parish event, it has grown into a community-wide celebration. People from all over the state come to renew old friendships and make new friends. Local folks look forward to this special day. Add Bingo, a Silent Auction, Raffle, Farm & Garden Booth, carnival games for all ages, live music and you have a wonderful afternoon of FAMILY FUN. (See 2015 poster on this web site for details.)
What is truly unique about the BBQ? The PIT makes the difference. Approximately 1,500 lbs. of prime beef is slow cooked overnight in a deep pit. Add the Secret Sauce (another 60 yr. tradition) and the results melt in your mouth. A small bridge crane was built in 2001, to make it an easier and safer operation.
